WINTER
Garden Tips

  1. Visit the conservatory at Highland Park for sights, sounds, and smells of spring!
  2. Plan for your summer gardens: preview last year's records for successful plantings. You may wish to start your vegetable and flower seeds in a sunny window. If starting your own seeds, use sterile seed starting mixtures from a local garden center. You will need to supplement your plantings with a liquid fertilizer when using these soil mixtures.
  3. Look over your houseplants for any pests. Use pest controls only if necessary and always follow directions. Giving your houseplants an occasional bath by washing the foliage with a spray bottle with one quart of water and only one drop of liquid Lemon Joy will help remove dust and particles. Also, don't forget to rotate your houseplants 180 degrees to promote even growth.
  4. Look over your garden tools and get them ready for spring. Replace broken or worn parts on hand tools and change oil on power equipment.
  5. For a spring display in your house, cut some forsythia branches and put them in warm water in a bright room with filtered light.
  6. Look for area garden shows to attend for new and different approaches to garden design.
