Garden Tips

  1. "Fall is for planting." In addition to lawns, it is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials.
  2. Purchase spring flowering bulbs. Stagger blooming time of bulbs to increase length of color in spring. Shop early for best selection.
  3. Give houseplants a good cleaning prior to returning inside.
  4. Check and update your gardening records for a later review.
  5. To stimulate root and crown growth, apply a fall fertilizer to lawns. Use an analysis higher in potassium and phosphorus to encourage root growth and disease resistance. A ratio such as 5-10-10 or 5-10-5 should be readily available. Consider using fertilizers which are at least 50% organic.
  6. Check your watering and feeding schedule.
  7. Begin fall clean-up by raking leaves as they drop. If you do not have a compost area, consider building one for garden debris and "green" kitchen wastes.
