What is Cogeneration?
  •  Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of heat and electricity.
  •  At the University, electricity will be generated during the normal process of satisfying the heating and cooling needs of the River Campus and Medical Center.
5
Why Cogenerate?
  • Increase efficiency of energy production and distribution systems.
  • Renew physical infrastructure of plant and distribution.
  • Reduce exposure to volatile energy markets.
  • Generates more than 50% of annual electric needs of River Campus and Medical Center with  less than 1% increase in natural gas consumption.
  • On site power generation provides business continuity for critical patient care, student housing, and research programs.
  • Reduce energy-related emissions.

Environmental
  •  Electricity cogenerated on site will reduce annual emissions from power plants that currently supply University’s electricity:
    • 33,000 tons of CO2
    • 56 tons of Nox
    • 112.5 tons of SOx

Hot Water Distribution System
  • Reduce energy losses from steam distribution
  • Reduce costs of maintaining old steam piping
  • Allow central plant to serve additional buildings
  • Increase cogeneration thermal efficiency
  • Distribution piping to be installed on River campus and Medical Center
